Trend Alert – Wellness and Interior Design

Share

Since we’re nearing the end of 2020 (phew!), today I’m talking about one of my favourite 2020 interior design trends – one that I think will be here to stay in 2021 and throughout this entire decade. This trend coincides with the wellness industry, which is one of the biggest global trends permeating our lives these days.

Can you guess how wellness and interior design intersect? Read on to learn more.

Today’s Trends: Yearning for Zen – at Home

Bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, family room, wellness room – hey, wait a second! Huh?

That’s right, wellness room. Wellness rooms are a big interior design trend this year, and they’re not going anywhere.

We’re all familiar with home gyms – picture a spare guest room hastily converted into a workout zone, with a treadmill, yoga mat and a dumbbell set (or maybe a Peloton, if you’re like me!). The wellness room is the natural evolution of the home gym.

Wellness rooms include things like yoga and barre studios, steam rooms, infrared saunas, meditation spaces, rock gardens, massage tables, reading nooks and more. These days, everyone is craving space to reflect and restore. In the midst of an ongoing pandemic, the desire to unplug, decompress and renew oneself at home is even greater. Creating separation from work life and personal life is increasing in importance as more people are working from home. And mental health is a huge priority for today’s home buyers and home owners, from millennials to baby boomers and beyond.

Wellness rooms are essentially in-home retreats, and more and more people are embracing them.

Wellness rooms must be a mix of beautiful and functional, but there aren’t many rules to creating them because they’re so individual and personal. Here are a few keys that I like to keep in mind, however:

✨ Be open-minded when designing a wellness room

As I mentioned above, different people will want different things from a wellness room. Work with your client or your target audience to design a unique, individualized solution.

✨ Size doesn’t matter

A wellness room might be the size of a large bedroom (or larger!) or it might be a walk-in closet. Because the concept is flexible, the space set aside for a wellness space is also flexible. Get creative!

 Embrace sanctity

There’s no denying it: in 2020, our homes have become our sanctuaries more than ever before. Interior design professionals intuitively get this, and the wellness room is an opportunity for us to embrace this even more and to design spaces that are rejuvenating and meaningful.
